Geography
All Saints CE Primary School Geography curriculum
Intent
The intention of the Geography Curriculum at All Saints Primary School is to inspire children’s curiosity in the world they live in and their place in it. Geography, by nature, is an investigative subject therefore through our teaching, we intend to provoke thought and questions. We encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world. Children at All Saints will widen their knowledge of the world around them which will in turn embed respect for different cultures as well as a fascination and curiosity for places and people beyond their local area. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive as well as transferable all the way from EYFS to Year 6. The curriculum allows the children to be ready and confident in their knowledge and skills for their further education.
Implementation
Geography at All Saints is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. EYFS to Year 2 have six topics in a year and Year 5 and 6 have three. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and consideration has been given to ensure coverage and progression across topics throughout each year group and across the school.
Geography is taught as part of our termly curriculum driver, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. At the beginning of each term, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different levels of previous knowledge. Each topic has a knowledge organiser so the children can see what they will know by the end of the topic. Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion.
Cross curricular outcomes in geography are specifically planned for and the local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice. We seek to broaden children's real-life experiences both inside and outside of school through educational visits and exploration and discovery.
Impact
Children will understand the significance of major global locations and can talk about geographical features and explain the impact humans have on the world. They will understand connections between different Geography units, as well as between Geography and other subjects so their learning can be linked. Children are equipped with the geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world. We want the children to be enthusiastic about Geography, link it to their own lives, share their discoveries and understand the importance of their learning.
